You have to get creative.

As I said earlier, Ilona is the only person I interviewed who started with a traditional publisher. Back when Ilona published her first book 20 years ago, she had no internet, no self-publishing platform, and no social media. Basically, all the opportunities we have nowadays.

The chance of getting published and broadcasted was slim. You needed an agent, and publishers had hundreds of books to review and assess to whether they’d be winners or losers.

Most got tossed out.

“Now, if it had been nowadays, I might have gone the self-publishing route especially, well, with your guidance Trevor. My God, if I had met you earlier I would have jumped on that! But I didn’t have that resource. All I had was a traditional publishing route.

In 1990, basically there weren’t many other options but being picked up by an agent who then represents me to a publishing company, well that’s another story and I’ve had so many people knock on my door and say, “Can you open the door for me to get an agent to look at it?”

They have 100 books a day to look at and of course they just toss out most of all of them. Going the traditional publishing working route, you would probably tell your clients is like tedious and likely not to lead to any publication.”

Since the publishing industry has changed so much since 1996, Ilona’s she’s “writing” her book, and “promoting” her new books differently.

In her words, “The old days, they’re over, the bookstores are dying, let’s be honest. They’re dinosaurs and although they’re very cute and many people still like holding a book, it’s a dying art.”

Today, Ilona self-publishes her books. For most authors, I suggest the same.
